SUMMARY:Webinar: Do we need to do more to ensure the safe carriage of vehicles onboard ships?
DESCRIPTION:The global passenger ferry industry has averaged more than 1\,000 fatalities per year since the 1960s\, with the great majority occurring on domestic voyages in Asia and Africa. \nBoth industry and regulators have undoubtedly made significant strides on safety during this period\, however fast forward to 2020 – 2022 and there remain evolving challenges to vessel safety. For example\, despite vehicles being covered by the provisions of the IMDG Code we have seen several high-profile examples of catastrophic fires on board car-carriers and ferries\, at least one resulting in total loss. Although the cause of the fires has not yet been determined insurers continue to warn that the transportation of vehicles fitted with lithium-ion batteries are an emerging risk for both Ro/Ro Passenger vessel and pure car and truck carriers (PCTC’s). \nThe European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) recently published guidance for the safe carriage of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) in Ro-Ro spaces of passenger and cargo ships to tackle this emerging challenge. \nThis report examines how AFVs are a serious safety concern which\, when coupled with the enormous growth of the AFV fleet indicates how industry is being presented with new safety challenges. With uncertainty over the potential fire risks and unfamiliarity with any associated fire characteristics it is not clear if the maritime sector has the solutions to provide safe transportation of vehicles. \nIn this webinar we will hear from a maritime operator\, an insurer and a specialist in lithium-ion batteries on the current situation and the risks involved. We will also discuss approaches to possible solutions and hear from a technologist on the potential for new technology adoption.

Technological innovations led to the development of automated monitoring systems and maritime sensors networks\, producing a tremendous increase of the maritime data available and opening new avenues to interdisciplinary science-driven maritime operations and policy making. Institutional and industrial initiatives are developing infrastructures for maritime data sharing and offering advanced processing\, fusion\, and analysis\, developing added values products in support of the maritime operational and industrial communities\, policy making and informed citizenship.The Maritime Big Data Workshop 2022 is organized under the umbrella of the 23rd IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM 2022). DESCRIPTION:International Conference on Maritime Technology and Engineering \nThe National Conferences in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering began in 1987 with the joint organization of Instituto Superior Técnico and the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Section of the Portuguese Association of Engineers (Colégio de Engenharia Naval da Ordem dos Engenheiros). The 11 editions of the event were initially organized annually\, becoming later a bi-annual event including one edition in 1997 organized together with the Association of Naval Architects of Spain. \nThe previous Conference had to be postponed 6 months and was held mostly remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on this experience\, and accounting for the possibility that some participants may not be able to be present\, the MARTECH 2022 Conference will allow for remote participation\, although it is expected to be held mostly in presence. \nThe Conference will continue to have a broad scope\, covering all aspects of maritime activity including:\n• Ship Design (structures\, hydrodynamics\, machinery)\n• Ship Building and Repair\n• Maritime Transportation and Ports\n• Fishing and Aquaculture\n• Energy Resources\n• Military and Surveillance Vessels\n• Recreational Craft and Maritime Tourism \nThe official language of the event is English. At the same time\, and at the same location\, the traditional national Conference will be held in Portuguese in parallel sessions.
